The Yearly Checklist, your Schedules for Cleaning House:

Just what is a house cleaning list, and why do we need one. The reality is that we have so much going on in our lives today, that keeping track of everything we need to do is almost impossible.

So we make a list, and that seems to make it much easier on us. There is the house cleaning list, the repair and maintenance list.

And a list for just about everything else you can think of. But we are here to talk about the house cleaning checklist. So let’s get to it.

Yearly Checklist

Windows

get them cleaned inside and out at least once or twice a year. This includes washing the screens, and tracks. A Schedules for House Cleaning must do.

Window Treatments

remove the window coverings and get them cleaned. If you can send them out then do. Once a year should be enough. Blinds: if you have blinds, then clean them at least once a year.

There are companies that will come to your home, remove the blinds, wash them sonically and replace them back all in the same day look for their specials. Shutters: once or twice a year it’s a good idea to wash-down all of your interior shutters. This is great home organization.

Walls, Trim, Moldings, Wainscoting, and Paneling

get them washed down and if you need to add some wax or refinish in any way at least once a year is a good schedule.

Floors

carpeting, wood, tile, stone, porcelain, marble, or any other surface you may be using for your floors. Get them refinished at least once a year.

Heating and Air Conditioner

get them cleaned and serviced at least once a year. Spring for air and fall for heat. This is another one of those Schedules for Cleaning House must do's.

Washer and Dryer

give them both a good clean. Fill the washer with hot water and add a cup of bleach and clean it out.

If you have an agitator in your washer, then remove the top piece and take some hot water and brush and get the build-up of detergent out of it.

If you don’t have an agitator but your washer uses centrifugal force to wash then just use the bleach to clean it.

With the dryer, remove the lint vent and take a brush a go into the inside of it and remove as much lint as possible.

It’s also a very good idea at least one time during the year to have your dryer vent cleaned out. They can get plugged very easily and can cause a fire.Keep this near the top of your Schedules for Cleaning House.

Closets, Drawers, and Shelf's

Closets, drawers, and shelves: go through them all at least once a year and remove all of those items you no longer need or want. Wipe out the drawers and shelves.

Attic

if you have one go through and reclaims some of your space by getting rid of everything you no longer use or want. Give to your favorite charities.

Basement

the days of having an open space down there is almost totally gone. It is usually space reclaimed for offices, storage, or recreation, like media rooms.

Either way once a year to give it a good clean is a great idea, for The Schedules for Cleaning House. Of course giving to charity all those items you no longer use is a good thing.

Fireplace

Fireplace: if you have gas and it’s ventilated properly you really don’t have too much here but clean the glass on the front of the box.

If however you have a wood burning fireplace, then you need to pay attention to the flu and the chimney stack.

Getting someone in once a year to clean the chimney is a good idea; you wouldn’t want the buildup of creosote to your stack to cause a fire.

Pay attention to this and don’t let it go to long before you have it done.Another Schedules for Cleaning House must do.

Garage

Garage: pull the cars out and remove everything from the floors. Sweep it and wash it down.

If you have shelving in here or cabinets, go through them and remove everything you no longer need.

This will of course free up space for next year’s storage. Well there you are, a schedule for the whole year wrapped up into one schedule.

I know it works because this is the schedule I use for most of my clients. There are variations to this of course, but the basics are there. Nothing is left to chance. If you print it out, then use it.
